I just walked home from the bar and I saw some people sleeping behind a trash receptacle. The lady was crying her eyes out. They where older folk I sat down and had a few words with her and her husband. Beautiful people. I gave them $100 and asked them to come over and spend the night in a warm place. The guy was in desert storm. They refused my offer and walked me to burger king (a block from home) to get something to eat. That really hurt. I think I'm having a hard time. I left crying.

 

You did the right thing, we all should be doing that.

Good on you. Don't know if things will get better or worse, I just know that this country is/has seriously changed. Unfortunately, with the current political climate, I don't foresee any help coming in any form.

Life sucks for many people from of all walks of life. The poor don't have a monopoly on it.

While your intentions were good and I like to believe there are good honest people in the world I personally wouldn't have complete strangers stay over night or while I was sleeping. I would have paid for a motel or something as they could rob you, kill you or anything. I was just read the riot act here somewhere on this forum about meeting people off Craigs list and have to wonder where those folks are now and why they aren't speaking up.

 

Without question the practice of inviting a stranger into your home are risky, but there are levels of risk in anything we do. To my thinking, inviting a couple who are obviously in trouble into your home is a lot less risky than inviting someone who is advertising on Craigslist or other online meeting places for sexual favors.

But, you are correct on the idea that it would be better to put them into a motel or somewhere they will be warm and you will be safe. It is entirely possible that they refused his offer of a place to stay because they were concerned about HIS intentions and their own safety.

 

Especially if he had been drinking and they smelled alcohol on his breathe.

 

Then you place them into a motel, and they steal the TV, remote, sheets, towels, bed, and leave the water running.
They might be crack heads and lying about desert storm. Unfortunately, these days, you shouldn't take the chance.
Feed them and escort them to a shelter.

It really doesn't work that way.

Go to any budget motel with cash and you have a room.

 

Aren't tv's and lamps bolted down? They are in the cheaper hotels/motels here. LOL Really if they need it that bad that they have to rob sheets and towels I would pay the bill without argument if the motel contacted me and consider that I just tithed that month to the homeless.

Not everyone who falls on hard times are "crack heads" or bad people. A person could get sick with a serious illness, lose their job, and wind up homeless in a very short time. Not all towns have homeless shelters. However, all towns have people who fall on hard times now and then....

 

Well that's nice,....they will have food booze and drugs for 3 days now....

 

For $100.00 will last 3 days? That didn't last me one night back 25 years ago.

 

I can blow a 100 in a blink of an eye..............

But if you are on the streets you make it last....

 

I am in shock that there are people kind enough to give someone a helping hand up that still exists in today's cold, cruel and very evil world. Hopefully some day the favor will be returned to you in a much greater way.
