Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has written to the Mumbai Police requesting that his statement be recorded via video conferencing after failing to appear for questioning in cases filed over his “traitor" remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The Mumbai Police have issued three summonses to Kamra, who is believed to be in Puducherry, asking for his personal appearance. However, he has missed all three. The most recent summons, issued on April 1, was for him to appear on April 5, but he again failed to attend.

Last week, after Kamra missed the second summons, a team from the Khar Police visited his residence in Mahim to serve the notice.

So far, four FIRs have been filed against the 36-year-old comedian in Maharashtra after a controversy erupted over his stand-up comedy act titled ‘Naya Bharat,’ which was originally recorded in February at Habitat Studio in Hotel Unicontinental, Khar, Mumbai.

However, once the video of the comedy act was released on Kamra’s YouTube channel on March 22, the row began, with the comedian facing backlash, especially from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena party, who demanded an immediate apology from him.

Shiv Sena workers, led by party social media in-charge Rahul Kanal, went to Habitat Studio and vandalised the venue on the same day the video was released. Kanal and the workers were arrested for vandalism but were later released on bail.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail till April 7. He had approached the court seeking transit anticipatory bail, citing multiple threats he received following his comments.
